Q. Who is in the Residence Life Office?
A. Residence Life is comprised of two types of staff:
student and professional staff. Each hall has a Resident Assistant
(RA) who is a student. It is their responsibility to provide information
to residents, plan activities, and see that hall regulations are
upheld. There are always at least 2 RAs on duty for campus. While
on duty, RAs do a walking patrol of the campus.
Full-time professionals in the Office of Residence Life who hold
masters degrees in counseling and/or higher education supervise
the RAs and are responsible for the total operation of the residence
hall community. This includes supervising staff, advising and counseling
students and groups, coordinating hall programs, and administering
College policies. Professional staff members live on or very near
campus. There is always a professional staff member on call and
available 24 hours a day.
Rodney Bardwell- Director of Residence Life & Housing
Amy Thompson- Assistant Director of Residence Life & Housing
Katie Thorne - Coordinator of Residence Life & Housing
Q. What is the purpose of the Residence Life
and Housing Office?
A. The mission of the Office of Residence Life and Housing is
to facilitate a living and learning environment so residents will
maximize the benefits of attending a small residential liberal arts
college.
Q. Why is Residence Life important?
A. Education is more than a means to an end and includes more
than formal instruction in the classroom. Informal educational opportunities,
including companionship with others and an involvement in community
living, are essential aspects of the total college experience. We
at Randolph-Macon College consider the residence halls to be an
important setting for this informal education. These student facilities
are places for teaching responsible citizenship and for developing
positive personal and social values. The staff is committed to assisting
students in fulfilling their diverse social needs. In the process
of student development, responsibility and accountability are promoted.
Q. How are residence hall assignments and roommate
assignments made?
A. Entering students are assigned rooms in the residence halls
by the Office of Residence Life and Housing during the summer. Assignment
to a residence hall is based upon the dates of receipt of both the
$300 enrollment deposit and the Room Assignment Request Form, which
is forwarded to the student upon acceptance. Roommates are usually
assigned by evaluating information provided by students on that
form concerning their housing and lifestyle preferences.
Most first-year students live in the "motel"-style residence
halls across from the football field ("down campus").
A few live in the three-story "up-campus" halls, Moreland,
Conrad, and Mary Branch.
Q. What does my student need to bring?
A. All residence hall rooms are provided with an overhead light,
a desk, an extra long twin bed, and storage space in either a chest
of drawers and/or drawers under the bed. All windows have blinds,
so drapes are not necessary.
Try to coordinate with the roommate for items like refrigerators,
televisions, microwaves, and a telephone. Carpets will be available
for purchase on moving day.
Every time students begin to pack for school, they always wonder
exactly what they will need for the year. Here is a short list of
some essential and optional items that our students have found useful.
You will be amazed at how much they will be able to have in their
residence hall room!

Q. What kind of supervision is in the residence
halls?
A. Each hall is staffed by undergraduate Resident Assistants
who serve as resource persons and problem-solvers. They help students
participate in intramurals, convey information about college programs,
regulations and procedures, and maintain a satisfactory living/learning
environment. RAs are supervised by the Assistant Director of Residence
Life and Housing.
Q. Is R-MC a "safe" place to live?
What kind of system does the College have to maintain the safety
and security of students?
A. Because of its small-town location, Randolph-Macon is considered
to be a reasonably safe environment. Campus Safety officers are
on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In the event of accidents,
the Ashland Volunteer Rescue Squad is summoned from two blocks away.
The halls are locked 24 hours a day, and a lock secures each students
room. A fire/smoke detection system is in operation in all residence
rooms, and the fire department is also only two blocks away. Recent
improvements to campus lighting and an outdoor phone system linked
to Campus Safety have also enhanced the overall safety of the campus.
Q. What about a student identification card?
A. R-MC I.D. cards are issued to all students when they
enroll. The card should be carried at all times. It is essential
to gain admittance to some campus buildings (including the Student's
Residence Hall) to access the R-MC dining hall program, and to check
materials out of the library.
Q. Are any of the residence halls co-ed?
A. Yes. Jones, Moreland, Conrad, Thomas Branch, and Mary Branch.
Q. What is the Colleges policy concerning
visitation in the residence halls by members of the opposite sex?
A. R-MC allows the visitation of friends, relatives and
fellow students of the opposite sex in the residence halls if they
are there for the purpose of studying, relaxing, and socializing.
The College does not condone cohabitation (the use of a room
by a nonresident or guest as if they were a resident of the room).

Center on the northwest end of campus. The phone number is 804-752-3041.

Payment arrangements for Medical Services
The majority of care provided to the students on campus in the Student
Health Clinic is free of charge. If, in the provisions of on-campus
care the practitioner determines that the student requires laboratory
tests, the student will be charged a fee to cover the cost of the
test. In addition, if the student requires care at the Air Park
Medical facility, he/she will be charged a minimal fee for the visit
in addition to the cost of any testing. Air Park Medical does not
directly bill insurance companies. If requested, an itemized bill
will be provided to submit to the insurance carrier. Reimbursement
from the insurance company is entirely the responsibility of the
student. Services Services are provided on campus in the Student
Health Clinic by board certified nurse practitioners. Nurse practitioners
(NP) evaluate, diagnose, treat and manage chronic and episodic medical
conditions. In the event that a student requires care by a medical
specialist or an emergency room, if available the nurse practitioner
will assist the student as needed to discuss the care options and
make the process as smooth as possible. The clinic is a walk-in
clinic. No appointment is necessary. If a prescription is written,
the student is responsible for picking up and paying for the medication.
Other services include but are not limited to:
Allergy injections
Evaluation and treatment of seasonal allergies
Treatment of minor injuries and illnesses

A. Within the immediate vicinity of the College we have
Ukrops Pharmacy - 798-8543,

A. Depending on which one of the four different meal plans
is selected, up to nineteen meals per week are available to students
in the Colleges Estes Dining Hall through contract with Chartwells
Food Service. In addition to the number of meals offered, dining
dollar points are included in each meal plan for students to use
on food between meals and late at night. A salad bar, pasta bar,
ice cream bar, and deli bar are daily features, and there are always
unlimited seconds on everything. Freshmen are assigned to the 19

Students need only bring a regular phone to participate in the college
system. Students may choose to use the Colleges long distance
calling program or use their personal calling cards.
Q. Are residence hall rooms wired for a computer
and cable TV?
A. Yes. About half of our students bring a computer. Be

assigned e-mail accounts when they first arrive on campus. Don't
have a computer? There are computers for student use located in
the Copley Science Center and McGraw-Page Library computer labs.
Each room is equipped with basic cable service with 35 channels,
including one for campus announcements and another for the R-MC
Campus Activities Board movies.
