Rapid strep test — this tests for the most common strain of strep (Group A). If your rapid strep test is negative you may need a culture to screen for other strains of strep throat.
If you have strep throat (a bacterial infection) antibiotics are given. Often sore throats can be viral and supportive therapy only is indicated (tylenol, cough drops/lozenges, hydration, etc).
